AI GEO content optimization workflow: one page, made answer-ready
A practical 7-stage workflow for improving one important page for AI-generated search and answers — decide which questions it should answer, audit before rewriting, use AI selectively, then verify and measure.
- Works with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any general-purpose AI tool
- For one existing page or substantial draft at a time
- Complements SEO; promises no rankings, citations or traffic

The idea
What is GEO content optimization?
Generative engine optimisation is often sold as tactics: add an FAQ, bolt on statistics, repeat the question in a heading. The result reads like copy written for a machine, and frequently includes claims nobody can support.
This workflow treats it as content quality: a page that answers the right questions clearly, with verifiable evidence and genuine expertise, is more useful to readers and to the systems that summarise it.
What each step produces
AI analyses before it rewrites, and it never supplies the evidence. People decide which questions matter, which sources are credible, and which changes are publishable.
The workflow
The 7-stage GEO content optimization workflow.
One workbook per page. Diagnosis comes before any new copy, and the workflow ends with a measurement, not “optimised forever”.
- 01
Define
Set the page, audience, knowledge level, purpose, desired reader outcome, business objective and a realistic GEO objective. Record what must be preserved.
Output: A page optimisation brief
Recorded in: Page & Goal
- 02
Discover
Gather questions from real sources, then decide for each: keep here, better on another page, reject, or undecided.
Output: A focused answer-opportunity set
Recorded in: Answer Opportunities
- 03
Audit
Assess each priority question for coverage, directness, evidence, freshness, original value, entity clarity and structure — and run a light technical eligibility check.
Output: A GEO gap register
Recorded in: Content & Evidence Audit
- 04
Prioritise
Turn gaps into concrete actions with an owner, a priority and whether evidence is needed. Labels, not a synthetic score.
Output: An optimisation action plan
Recorded in: Optimization Plan
- 05
Improve
Use the AI modules only where they save effort, and record a human decision on every output: accept, edit, reject, or needs evidence.
Output: Human-approved improvements
Recorded in: AI Assist & Human Review
- 06
Verify & publish
Run 17 pre-publish checks, from verified claims to crawler access, then record the live URL, date and the changes that matter.
Output: A publication record
Recorded in: Publish, Verify & Measure
- 07
Measure
Compare against a baseline across AI visibility, citations, search and business outcomes, then choose the next step.
Output: An iteration decision
Recorded in: Publish, Verify & Measure
The questions
Every question gets a decision.
Start from real evidence — search data, AI-feature reporting, customer questions — then decide where each one belongs.
Keep here
This page should answer it. Aim for a focused 5–15.
Better another page
Important, but it would distort this page. A healthy outcome.
Reject
Low value or off scope.
Undecided
Needs more evidence before you choose.
The audit
Nine things to check before rewriting.
Each priority question is rated with the evidence behind the judgement, so the result is a gap register, not a list of vague suggestions.
A reputable source isn’t enough. If it doesn’t directly support the claim, the claim isn’t verified.
AI’s role
Eight modules, each with a human gate.
Use only the ones that save effort. Every output is a draft or an analysis — never evidence by itself.
Question discovery
Keep only questions that are real, relevant and right for this page.
Coverage audit
Confirm the model didn’t misread the page.
Claim & evidence review
Verify sources yourself; AI confidence isn’t evidence.
Clarity & structure review
Reject changes that harm nuance or readability.
Content improvement
Fact-check and edit before use.
Differentiation review
Only add value the business actually has.
Answer extraction test
Use failures as diagnostics, not as a ranking score.
Adversarial QA
Resolve material issues before publishing.
Measurement
Several signals, one baseline.
There’s no single GEO number. Compare a period before the update with a period after, across the signals that apply.
Ground rules
Five rules for GEO without the gimmicks.
Analyse before you rewrite
Diagnose the page against its priority questions first. Replacement copy comes after the gaps are known.
Nothing invented
No AI-generated statistics, quotes, studies, sources, customer results, capabilities or first-hand experience.
No universal GEO score
Track specific readiness checks, visibility signals, search data and business outcomes instead of one made-up number.
Don’t stuff the page
If a question matters but doesn’t belong here, send it to another page. A focused page beats an overloaded one.
In practice
One guide, one cycle.
Fictional example
Customer Research Plan Guide
- DefineAudience: small-business founders planning customer interviews. Purpose: teach a process. GEO objective: be a useful source for explanatory answers.
- Discover“How do I create a customer research plan?” — high importance, partial coverage, evidence available. Kept here.
- AuditThe process exists but is buried across paragraphs with no explicit sequence. Evidence verified; original value strong. Gap: high.
- PrioritiseAdd a concise step sequence based on the existing real method, keeping the detailed explanation below.
- ImproveAI suggests structure from the existing content only; the owner accepts it with edits.
- VerifyChecks pass, the founder interview example and CTA are preserved, and the live date is recorded for later comparison.
The kit
Put the workflow into practice.
Everything above is on this page for free. The kit solves the other problem: keeping one page’s questions, gaps, actions, AI decisions, QA and measurements connected through a full cycle.

Better together
Choose the page first. Keep it current after.
This workflow optimises one page. Two companions help you choose which pages matter and keep them fresh.
Before
Decide which pages matter
Prioritise content opportunities across search and AI-answer signals, so you optimise the pages worth it.
SEO + GEO Content Opportunity WorkbookAcross the library
Audit what you have
Decide which existing pages to keep, refresh, rewrite, consolidate or retire.
AI Content Audit & Refresh WorkflowRun it where you edit
Keep the eight GEO modules one click away.
Coverage audits, claim reviews and answer extraction tests get run on every page you optimise. Workbench is our browser extension for exactly that — keep prompts organised, fill the variables in a form, and run them without leaving ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
FAQ
Questions, answered.
What is GEO?+
Generative engine optimisation: improving content so it’s a clear, credible, useful source for AI-generated search and answer experiences. In practice it overlaps heavily with good SEO and good writing — answer the right questions directly, support claims, and offer something original.
Does GEO replace SEO?+
No. The workflow complements SEO and keeps existing search intent, internal links and on-page context intact. Accessibility, indexing and crawlability still matter for a page to be found at all.
Can this guarantee my page gets cited by ChatGPT or Google AI?+
No, and nothing honestly can. The workflow improves the page’s usefulness and clarity, then measures what happens. Manual tests in AI tools are directional: results vary by platform, model, date, location and run.
Should I add an FAQ section for GEO?+
Only if it genuinely helps readers. Lists, tables and FAQs are checked in QA to make sure they improve comprehension rather than exist because they sound like GEO tactics.
How many questions should one page answer?+
A focused working set, usually five to fifteen. Questions that matter but would distort the page’s purpose should go to another page instead.
How do I measure GEO results?+
Against a baseline, across several signals: platform reporting on AI-feature visibility and citations where available, relevant search performance, directional manual checks, and the business outcome the page supports. No single number tells the story.
Can AI rewrite my page for GEO?+
It can help with specific, approved changes, and only after the page has been diagnosed. It must not add invented statistics, sources or experience, and every material change gets a human decision.
